The Legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed "Six Triple Eight," made history as the only all-Black, all-female unit to serve overseas during World War II. Deployed to Europe in 1945, these 855 remarkable women faced the monumental task of clearing a backlog of millions of pieces of undelivered mail that had accumulated over two years. Working in difficult conditions in aircraft hangars in Birmingham, England, and later in Rouen and Paris, France, they processed an average of 65,000 pieces of mail per shift, working around the clock in three shifts. Their motto, "No Mail, Low Morale," reflected their understanding that connecting service members with loved ones back home was essential to troop morale and the war effort. Despite facing both racism and sexism, these pioneering women completed their mission with excellence, clearing the backlog in half the expected time. Their service paved the way for future generations of women and African Americans in the military, embodying courage, determination, and unwavering dedication to duty.
